She’s 98, she’s the world’s oldest yoga teacher and of all the quotes we’ve read about ageing, hers tops the lot: “I don’t believe in age. I believe in energy. Never let age dictate what you can and cannot do”, says Tao Porchon-Lynch (bottom row, far right), nailing the fact spot-on that it’s not “how old are you?” It’s about how you “live your age”!
Another nugget of wisdom from Sophia Loren: “There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”
We’re not doing “New Year, New You” (January’s most over-used glossy magazine cover), and we are definitely not detoxing (I believe the winter months are a terrible time to do this, completely going against nature and what our bodies need – and who wants to detox when it’s minus one degree outside?) Best leave that to the lighter, longer, warmer days of spring. Better just to cut out the crap and eat lots of whole, nutrient-rich foods or if you really do want to detox, make it a very short one!
Instead, we invite you to join January’s ageless beauty conversation on social media (hashtag #RockYourAge – yes the caps are useful here, otherwise it looks like #rockyourage Rock Your Rage…no!)
I really hope you enjoy The Beauty Shortlist’s January ROCK YOUR AGE campaign!
We’ll be sharing videos, interviewing women who are breaking boundaries and creating innovative makeup ranges for those of us who are just hitting 40-ish or already did way back when, and we’ll be zooming in on some of the most intelligent beauty products you have to have/add to your kit if you haven’t tried them yet.
38 countries entered The 2017 Beauty Shortlist Awards this year, giving us a fantastic opportunity to test-drive brands from Korea, Japan, Australia and the US that we might otherwise not have got a chance to look at in depth, had they not entered, and I’m happy to say we’re making great headway towards the “you have to try this!” shortlist already, but still a lot of work till we sift out the ultimate winners.
What does Rocking Your Age mean to you? Which products do you swear by? Do you think we’ll see a more visible spike in older-centric beauty brands? Brands have been notoriously slow and somewhat reticent to embrace this market, led so far by L’Oreal and skincare brands like ARK SKINCARE. Will we see more revolutionary campaigns, magazine covers and shifts in attitude this year? However cloudy or clear your crystal ball is, 2017 could pull off some big surprises…
For the first time for the 2017 Beauty Shortlist Awards, we included new categories like “Best Beauty Product for Age 60-plus”, and we can’t wait to share the results on Thursday 2nd March. And, for the first time, we’ll announce the shortlisted brands in early to mid February (we don’t normally do this so it should be an exciting sneak peek before the big reveal).
No time for the January blahs…I hope your January ROCKS!!
If you only do one thing this month…get off the sofa and on to the dance floor
Tao Porchon-Lynch shows us how it’s done – at age 96 on America’s Got Talent
“She’s 96, but sometimes I think she lies” – Vard, Tao’s dance partner.
“Dancing is pure pleasure, there’s so much to do and so little time to do it” – Tao.
